Lessons 1 & 2: We look at how to use the small shield we often use with the shorter sidesword or cut and thrust rapier and combine it with the longer thrusting oriented rapier. You will see how it works positionally very much like your offhand.
Lessons 3 & 4: The buckler functions differently than a dagger or offhand in that it has nearly no capacity to hold the opponent’s weapon in place. We first look at how the buckler can play a primary defensive role and be reinforced by the sword’s position. We then look at how to find openings and weaknesses in the defense of the buckler.
Lessons 5 & 6: The cloak off your back was an important accessory for self-defense historically and is a very interesting secondary to explore now. With a thick cloak wrapped about the arm you could defend the arm from cuts and even most thrusts. The billow of the cloak also offered screening and protection for the body. We look at the basic guards and covers of the rapier and cloak.
Lessons 7 & 8: We look at some of the additional plays such as dropping the cloak, unfurling the cloak, and hiding the sword behind it. Then we look at how to defeat the cloak and use its weight and unwieldyness against the bearer.

- Practice all exercises slowly and with control.
- Practice using training swords that are not sharp and are specifically made for practice.
- Use protective gear for all exercises. In many of our videos we are not wearing head, throat or body protection in order to make clear explanation more possible. You should always use protective gear when practicing these arts regardless of the exercise.
