Assalti with Sidesword

Our assaults are based on texts by the Bolognese master Marozzo, and are also informed by the other masters contemporary to his time.

Assaults (Italian, assalti) are complex sequences of attack and defense that teach students to flow smoothly from one guard to the next, making cuts and thrusts in between. They also teach basic footwork combinations which can then be adapted and expanded for real-world combat.

We start our course with a refresher of cutting mechanics and relevant footwork needed for a smooth execution of the assaults.

For futher study and skill progression, the skeleton of the solo form can then be applied to partner drilling. The solo form is “one side” of the fight—like one side of a conversation—and the student is encouraged to imagine what actions their partner could make to prompt the responses performed in the assaults.

Acknowledgement of Safety and Risk

  1. Practice all exercises slowly and with control.
  2. Practice using training swords that are not sharp and are specifically made for practice.
  3. Use protective gear for all exercises. In many of our videos we are not wearing head, throat or body protection in order to make clear explanation more possible. You should always use protective gear when practicing these arts regardless of the exercise.
  4. Be aware that injuries in training are always possible. Ensure that you are practicing with care and caution at all times.
  5. DuelloTV is not responsible for any injuries that occur as a result of sword practice inspired from our videos.
