The lunge is one of the most essential movements in rapier. It is a short and powerful action that allows you to drive your sword forcefully toward your opponent while hiding yourself behind its protective hilt.
To lunge safely it is imperative that you always conduct the movement in proper order.
- Extend the sword.
- Reach with the shoulders and upper body.
- Push the body forward with an extension of the back leg and step of the front foot.
This allows you to not only present the threat of your sword first it also saves the most committed part of the action until last. If after extending your sword and body you don’t believe you will succeed in your attack, you can still change your plans before committing your most vulnerable targets.
