Gioco Largo vs Stretto

How to employ and counter narrow play (gioco stretto) when it faces wide play (gioco largo) and vice versa.

Wide and narrow play (gioco largo and gioco stretto) are essential to understanding how to size up an opponent and create counter-strategies. They are also essential tools for understanding and building your fundamental fencing skills.

In this series you will learn about:

  • Wide and narrow play as a way of analyzing guards (point away and on-line).
  • Determining opening actions and counter-strategies.
  • As a way to analyze crossings and how to work from them (binding and clearing as stretto and largo).
  • As a mode of fighting, tight and close (stretto), wide and flowing (largo) and how to counter those modes.

Useful content for all weapon disciplines. Explored primarily with longsword and sidesword.
