Longsword Quick Start

Learning how to wield the longsword is a powerful and inspiring experience. It's a great workout for your mind and body and the beginning of a journey into physical confidence and ability.

Welcome to your guided crash course in the art of the medieval two-handed longsword. This seven-lesson course with Maestro Devon Boorman is going to get you started quick and easy with the fundamentals of this awesome weapon. You’ll learn:

  • The core longsword fighting positions
  • Fundamentals of cutting in the downward blows
  • How to flow from one attack into another, and the X flow pattern
  • The four foundational Quadrant Guards
  • How to use the Three Advantages to control an opponent’s weapon, make your defense, and open them up for counter-attack
  • The five Defensive Winnings: parry, deflection, collection, counter-cut, and counter-thrust

Each lesson contains a video, written lesson, practice guidance, and quiz to help you retain what you’ve learned. Practice on your own or with a friend and when you’re done you’ll be ready to dive into the full Longsword Fundamentals course series and, from there, even more advanced content.

Let’s Get Started!

  • You’ll need a longsword simulator. This can be a sword, stick, cane, umbrella, or something as simple as a wooden dowel 40–50″ long (or shorter if you’re using it in a smaller space).
  • Use a mirror, video camera, or a partner to help check your form and make the most of your learning.
