Narrow & Deceptive (Sidesword Scholar)

This series explores how to use feints, invitations, and attacks to miss to deceive your opponent into giving up time and space in gioco stretto (the narrow fight) where the points are closest and most dangerous.

Nearly every fight finds its way into the narrow play (gioco stretto) where the points are close and dangerous. Here your tempos must be shorter and maintaining tight control of your opponent’s weapon is paramount. So, how do you make convincing deceptions that don’t risk being too large or leave you open?

In this series we’ll explore the use of feints, invitations, and attacks to miss from within the narrow play. You’ll learn

  • How to make feints that keep you covered.
  • How to use breadth and distance to prompt over chasing and give you safety.
  • When to leave the crossing and when to maintain it.
  • How to make compound feints and when you should just attack earnestly.

Bring a partner or a sword dummy to get the most out of these classes.
